Second-place finish in DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals opener at Volusia
Kicking off his pursuit for his fifth World of Outlaws Case Late Model Series championship, Brandon Sheppard returned to action at Volusia Speedway Park (De Leon Springs, Fla.) aboard the HOIST No. B5 Late Model for the fifth annual DIRTcar Sunshine Nationals.
After Thursday’s opener fell to wet weather, Sheppard raced into Friday’s $10,000-to-win prelim with a third-place finish in his heat. Putting on an impressive charge from the eighth row, Brandon passed 14 cars in the 35-lap affair to register a second-place finish. He crossed the line a mere 0.720 seconds behind Devin Moran with Ricky Thornton Jr. round out the podium.
On Saturday, Brandon followed up the second-fastest lap in his 28-car group with a runner-up showing in his heat. Chasing the $15,000 top prize in the feature, Sheppard clawed forward four spots to register a fifth-place finish.
With two events in the books, Sheppard holds a six-point advantage over Bobby Pierce atop the World of Outlaws point standings.
